Christian Peres Gibaut explores how some attributes of mosaics – fragmentation, uniformity, repetition – translate into alternative media in Tempo.
“The tessera is the essential element of mosaic, the minimum unit. A mosaic comprises hundreds or
thousands of individual tesserae, which blend into our retina to create an image. I wanted to
deconstruct the formal elements and the material components of mosaic, bringing the tessera into
the spotlight. Once freed from the mosaic paradigm, the tessera could take the shape of an
expressive mark in a painting or a geometric form in minimal arrangements.”
